November 2005 - Lofty Goals: Gary Day Builds Stone Canyon
By Mandi Harding, FCA Executive Director

Gary G. Day Construction is adding a new skill set to its repertoire of building experience with Stone Canyon Loft Homes under construction at Buffalo Drive between Charleston and Oakey boulevards.

Under the direction of homebuilder Blue Heron Properties, Gary G. Day Construction is building 23 lofts on a five-acre parcel.

“Each of the single-family, New York-style loft units were sold out before models could be erected,” said Kim Ecott, Gary G. Day’s production manager. “There is great demand for this unique housing product, as evident by the base $600,000 asking price with optional upgrades pushing the price tag to $1 million.”

Ecott noted buyers who missed out on this first phase of Blue Heron lofts can rest assured that another development of lofts in the planning stage for North Las Vegas in 2006.

The Stone Canyon lofts feature A & B floor plans, three distinct elevations and 10 optional layouts with square footage ranging from 3,400 to 3,880.

Ecott said, “The plans include four to six bedrooms with dual masters as an option, a media option, one to three optional rooftop decks providing unrivaled views of Red Rock Canyon and the Strip, 20-foot ceilings and private backyards. Some lofts will feature open roof systems above the kitchen areas, and each unit comes standard with an automated roll-up metal corrugated door in place of the traditional sliding glass door.”

Aside from stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and fireplaces, each unit will feature stained concrete floors and metal staircases.
“Although these homes have a zero lot line as a result of the growing land costs, the architect has preserved privacy by eliminating any low windows. There are large windows throughout, but they are at the top end of those 20 foot wall spans,” said Ecott. “Everything is very square in this design; you won’t see arches or curved walls. In the case of the exposed roof systems, TJL trusses will be used, which are a wood and metal combination truss that can accommodate the hard curved duct required to hide the electrical conduit.”

Important players to the viability of this project include Gary G. Day’s Project Supervisor Gabe Martin, Blue Heron’s Project Superintendent Larry Slife, Architect Marc Lemoine and Project Engineer Diane Hunt.

Aside from reinventing the jobsite by using cranes to stand the walls of the loft homes, Gary G. Day Construction has run into very few hardships in its flagship construction endeavor and project another six months before completion.
